The Lion and the Dentist

Poor, beautiful Cecil.

I am heartbroken that this magnificent creature was hunted, tortured, skinned and beheaded.  It’s just absolutely beyond the pale.  I don’t believe hunting is a sport.  How is it a sport when only one party knows what’s happening?  It’s dreadful.

This stunning lion was shot with an arrow.  It did NOT kill him outright.  He was tracked for the next bazillion hours until he collapsed.  He was then shot.  This is equally as cruel as fox hunting, and you know how I feel about that.

However, Continue reading

Typing & Eating

Because that’s what you do when you have one of the best lunches you’ve ever had from a “sandwich bar” type place!

Thank you to Pret to Go from your very new but very happy customer!!

This morning was not a good morning for me on the getting ready front.  In fact, it’s a miracle I made it to work ahead of time.  Possibly due to the taxi driver who thought he was on an F1 track.  I digress… so this morning I grabbed some left over steak from last nights dinner, and a banana, and ran out the door.  I’m not convinced I have actually brushed my hair today.  Bother.

Come lunch time, I have a rumbling tummy and an intense desire to eat something tastier than the rubbish that’s available in my building.  So, off I jolly to DIFC to explore their options.  I do have to say though, Pret to Go was on my list of places to look around as my super healthy colleague gets his lunch/afternoon snacks from there a lot.

I am soooo pleased I followed his lead.  Look at these little pots of yumminess… Continue reading

Kicking Healthy

I went to see a nutritionist the other day as part of my ongoing treatment for my stomach issues.  Where I have been so ill for the last few months, I am missing out on valuable nutrients or something.  There was a big explanation from my doctor about it.  I switched off after a while.

So, off I went to see the nice lady with the food advice.  She was excellent.  Not patronising at all.  She listened.  She asked questions.  She didn’t tell me to lose weight.  She completely understood my goal was about healthy and not beauty.

Armed with a bunch of print outs, a balanced diet sheet (ie, you need x servings of protein a day and this is an example of a serving), and confidence that this was achievable, I set off into the wide world.

I am, in case you’ve not noticed, a foodie.  I love food.  I love making it and eating it.  I love grocery shopping.  I love recipes and can spend hours looking at them online searching for inspiration.  One day when I am ‘all growd up’, I want to have my own little vegetable patch – preferably that comes with a gardener so I don’t have to get my hands dirty!  Ok, that was only half a joke.  But I do want to grow things.  Anyway, my point is that this is a challenge I am on board with.  I get to think differently and look at things in a new light.  This could be a great thing! Posh Burgers

You know how I wrote a love note to Claw the other day, and said how I don’t like going out on Thursday nights?  Yeah, well, Saturday nights are the same.  I generally am shattered from Friday’s activities, and sorting myself out for the week ahead.

(Writing this blog is actually highlighting that I need to get a life fairly swiftly!)

Anyway, this weekend I had a friend in town, and so Saturday night saw me leaving the comfort of my couch, and heading off to The Ivy for dinner.

For those of you who don’t know, The Ivy is originally a posh restaurant in London where celebs hang out and get papped coming and going from all the time.  I haven’t been there.  Dubai has the second one.  I am not sure if they have any celebs, but it’s in Emirates Towers which is nice! Inappropriate?

On Thursday night, somewhere after the third glass of bubbles, I had to say goodbye to one of my nails.  This may not be a big deal to many of you, but it is HUGE to me.  I have just spent three months growing them out after a disastrous manicure, and they were back to long and strong and perfectly shaped.  Then one was gone.  The middle one, which made me chuckle!  Not only was it broken though, it had been bent back so far that it had broken half way down the bit that is still attached.  (Is there a name for that?)  Any woman who has ever done similar will now have tears in their eyes at the memory of the ridiculous amount of pain this causes.

All was not lost however.  It may have bent and torn, but it was still attached enough to be able to save.  When I say save, I don’t mean keep the long nail and put a layer of glue over the top or anything.  I mean, cut off as close to the finger as you can, and then paint with a really thick colour to seal it in a bit while it heals.

So that’s exactly what I did. Continue reading

Pork Ribs and Margaritas

I am not someone who goes out all the time.  I like to stay home and cook or bake, and watch tv.  That is how I relax and and I am very happy with being a borderline hermit!

Thursday nights are especially ‘indoorsy’ for me.  I made it through the week.  I want to enjoy my weekend.  And, I am no longer in my 20’s!  It’s no longer “girls night” as Friday nights always were.  If there is wine consumed, its a glass and not a case.  I am happy with that.  I can’t bounce off the hangovers like I used to!

There is pretty much only one place that will make me change my mind and get ready at a speed to put Clark Kent’s transition to shame.

Claw!

This is one of the strangest places in Dubai and I love it.  It has amazing food and drinks.  Super friendly staff.  A completely eclectic music selection.  Customers representing every corner of the globe.  And pork ribs.  Yes, that’s right.  Pork! Continue reading
